About

Svenja Rott, born 1985, lives and works in Cologne. She says about her art:

When painting I am equally free and connected. Connected with nature: the sea, the green, mossy forest and a stream in which the water can flow freely and seek its own way. Through this inspiration, when I paint, an unconscious force within me takes the wheel and creates a sense of freedom. I am always happy when it is there and painting can just happen through it. It is a process of desired loss of control. Thus, the paintings are always an expression of my self and the processing of current feelings and impressions. They are very personal and an attempt to fix the ephemeral through art.

The images consist of overlapping shapes, transparent layers and concrete lines that symbolize boundaries between the inner and outer world and yet are inevitably connected. They are simultaneously reminiscent of microscopic photographs and natural landscapes from a bird's-eye view, and through this they tell in an abstract way about the connection to nature and to ourselves.
